4 Tips for Planning Your Patio Design

When it comes to designing your outdoor patio, you have to take a slightly different approach than the one you take when designing your indoor living space. Outdoors, you are limited in how much space you have and the kinds of furniture you can use. Here are four tips for designing your outdoor patio area.

Plan Before Buying

Many people buy furniture and then try to figure out a way to fit their new chairs and tables on their patio. That’s doing it backward. Instead, plan ahead before you buy. First, consider your needs and goals. What are you trying to accomplish? Are you going to have meals outside, are you going to entertain the neighbors, or are you simply looking for a place for you and your spouse to hang out? Next, take some rough measurements and have a general plan in your mind as to what you are going to buy and where you are going to put it. Remember that outdoors, you should consider placing a larger focus on convenience than on aesthetics.

Have a Focal Point

A good room design has a focal point, a place where the eye naturally wanders to and rests upon when you first enter the room. When designing your patio, make sure to have a nice table or something else as the focal point.

Consider Shape

If you are pressed for space, a good trick is to get furniture that is rounded instead of squared. You’ll be surprised at how a round table allows for more seating spaces and more room for the chairs. Rounded chairs can give you more room for plants.

Use Vertical Space

Use the wall of your house to hang light fixtures and plants such as flower pots or ivy. This will help you save a lot of space.
